In this article, you’ll see our 4 days in Lisbon itinerary. We’ve put together an itinerary for you to make the most of your trip, with special tips on tours and unmissable sights.

First day in Lisbon

To start your tour off on the right foot, try to get to know Lisbon’s historic center. Walk around Baixa Lisboeta, at sea level, and also visit Rua Augusta, one of the city’s main streets. As well as being very traditional, Rua Augusta is full of typical stores and buildings with preserved old façades.

This street connects Praça do Rossio to Praça do Comércio, so be sure to visit these two places, too. Our tip is to start your walk in Praça do Rossio, because in Praça do Comércio you’ll be able to admire the Tagus River and have lunch in one of the many amazing bars and restaurants that surround it.

After lunch, don’t miss the traditional Sé de Lisboa church, located next to Praça do Comércio. Next, head to Lisbon’s São Jorge Castle, located in a more elevated part of the city, but it’s well worth the climb and the higher you go, the more beautiful the view becomes.

This castle is large and allows you to wander around it all afternoon: ideal for taking lots of photos and observing the city from up there, which is most beautiful at sunset.

At night, don’t miss out on some of Lisbon’s best nightclubs, such as Lux Frágil, to get a feel for the city’s nightlife. But if you’re looking for other places to go in the Portuguese capital at night, be sure to check out our article on Lisbon’s nightlife.

Second day in Lisbon

To start your second day, visit the Chiado area, a neighborhood full of bookshops, cafés, restaurants and typical Portuguese establishments.

Be sure to have a coffee in the most famous café in the neighborhood: A Brasileira. It’s very popular for its statue of Fernando Pessoa, with which you can take a nice photo. If you prefer, you can also go to the famous Mercado da Ribeira, where you can enjoy typical dishes from Portugal and other parts of the world.

Afterwards, we recommend going up to Bairro Alto via the Elevador da Glória. If you prefer, have lunch there and, in the afternoon, wander around its streets, without any itinerary. This area is full of very interesting attractions, including Praça Luís de Camões, Miradouro de Santa Catarina, Igreja de Santa Catarina, Rua da Bica de Duarte Belo and several bars where you can enjoy some of the best cocktails in Lisbon.

At night, enjoy the bars in there, since it is Lisbon’s busiest district. There are also some nightclubs there, if you want to check them out.

Third day in Lisbon

We recommend that you reserve your third day in the city to visit Belém, Lisbon’s iconic region, but which is a little further away (about less than 30 minutes by transport). It’s well worth a visit, as it’s here that you’ll find the famous Belém Tower, the Monument to the Discoveries, the Jerónimos Monastery and the traditional pastéis de Belém.

All these places can be visited on foot, as they are very close to each other. However, you need to set aside a considerable amount of time to visit all of them, especially the monastery, which is huge and very beautiful.

Returning to the center of Lisbon, end the day with a stroll along the gigantic Avenida da Liberdade, where the traffic never stops. And if you have time to spare, don’t miss out on Parque das Nações, a new and modern area that will contrast with everything you’ve seen in the city so far.

The park has attractions for everyone, especially children: there is the Lisbon Oceanarium (one of the largest in Europe). In addition, you’ll find the cable car (a delightful ride that gives you a panoramic view from the top), the Lisbon Casino, the Vasco da Gama shopping mall and the modern Gare do Oriente station.

Fourth day in Lisbon

Once you’ve seen the main sights of Lisbon, we recommend that you take advantage of your last day in the city to visit the surrounding areas such as Sintra or Cascais, which are equally incredible.

Sintra is home to beautiful historic buildings such as Quinta da Regaleira and Pena Palace. The Cascais region, on the other hand, is a good place to visit in the summer, as it offers beaches, some gardens and even natural landscapes such as the point of rocks above the sea called Boca do Inferno, immortalized in the poems of Fernando Pessoa.
