Check out Amsterdam climate and weather by month and start planning your trip to this city. We’ve put together an overview of all the weather information, month by month.

What’s the weather like in Amsterdam?

The Netherlands is not a country of extreme temperatures, and the seasons are well marked there. But it’s worth saying that, compared to countries that tend to be very hot, Amsterdam can be considered a cold place.

As the Netherlands is located in an area under the influence of the Atlantic Ocean, the climate is characterized by mild summers and colder winters. Rainfall is frequent throughout the year, but rarely abundant. In other words, there is a lot of drizzle, but storms are uncommon. See below for the temperature in Amsterdam in each month of the year.

  • Important reminder: in the Netherlands, the beginning of the year is winter, then spring. The middle of the year is summer and last comes fall.

1. Winter in Amsterdam

The coldest month of the year in Amsterdam is January, when temperatures usually vary between -1°C and 5°C. There is an average chance of rain and snow, but when it does happen, it’s very little – in other words, there are no blizzards or storms that make sightseeing impossible.

Winter there officially begins in the last week of December, runs through January and into February and March. At this time of year, it’s best to go indoors and enjoy indoor activities, such as museums, which are usually air-conditioned, or go shopping. If you’re traveling as a couple, it’s also a great time to enjoy the romantic atmosphere of the city.

2. Spring in Amsterdam

Spring in Amsterdam is one of the most recommended times to visit the city – and, in our opinion, the most beautiful. It takes place between April and June and is the time when the flowers appear, especially the famous tulips, which have become the region’s postcard.

During this period, it tends to rain a lot, but there’s nothing to get in the way of outdoor walks – just remember to pack a raincoat or umbrella. Temperatures don’t rise above 20°C and the minimum is around 6°C, 7°C. The hottest month is June, as it’s closer to summer. Generally speaking, you can enjoy all of Amsterdam’s sights at this time of year.

The best thing about visiting the city in spring is seeing the flower gardens in the parks, such as the Keukenhof Garden in Amsterdam. There are even some parks that are only open at this time.
It’s a busy time in Amsterdam, even though it’s low season. So book your tickets and hotel in advance.

3. Summer in Amsterdam

Summer in Amsterdam is quite different from most countries, as the thermometers rarely exceed 24°C. Summer runs from the end of June to the beginning of September and is one of the best times to go outdoors.

Summer is ideal for boating along the canals, going to the parks, having picnics or simply walking around the city’s charming neighborhoods. In summer, it gets dark later, which gives travelers more time to make the most of the city.

Pack light clothes, but also at least two warm coats and two pairs of pants. Temperature changes are common.

4. Autumn in Amsterdam

Autumn is a very beautiful season in Amsterdam, because it’s when all the trees and foliage in the city turn orange/red. Temperatures average 16°C during the day and 3°C at night, and drop as the end of the year approaches. Autumn in the Dutch capital is like winter for Brazilians, so pack warm clothes.

This is the time of year when it rains the most, so it can be a bit of a nuisance, but you can still enjoy the city. The tip is, as in winter, to plan indoor walks on the days when the rain persists and is heavier. And, of course: take a raincoat and/or umbrella. Waterproof shoes and even wellies are a good choice for those traveling at this time of year.
