About the Last Supper
This great work of art, both in importance and size, measuring 4.6m X 8.8m, began production in 1495 and was finished three years later. Located in the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, which is also a convent opened in 1497, the idea for the painting came from Duke Ludovico Sforz who wanted a painting to decorate the refectory, where the monks eat together.
The work depicts one of the most important moments in the Christian faith: Jesus Christ’s last supper with his apostles in Jerusalem, just before he was betrayed by Judas and captured by Roman soldiers. The episode precedes Good Friday and Easter Sunday, the significance of which is Christ’s resurrection.
