Here’s a guide to the high and low season months and plan your trip to Cancun.
High season in Cancun
The high season in Cancun is from December to April, when the weather is drier and the temperatures are milder. During this period, beaches and resorts tend to be more crowded, and prices can rise significantly – so consider checking out the tips in our article on how to plan a trip to Cancun on a budget.
The high season months comprise the following seasons:
- Winter (December to February): during winter, Cancun experiences mild temperatures, with daily averages ranging from 20°C to 28°C. This is a popular period for tourists looking for pleasant weather and less crowds. Nights can be cooler, so pack a light sweater. Don’t forget sunscreen either, even in the milder temperatures.
- Spring (March to May): Spring brings warmer temperatures, ranging from 23°C to 32°C. This is an excellent time to visit if you want to enjoy ideal temperatures for outdoor activities. Local festivals also come alive at this time of year, providing an immersion in Mexican culture. Just be aware of the Spring Break period, the dates of which vary from year to year, and which tends to attract a LOT of tourists to this destination.

Low season in Cancun
If you prefer a quieter and more affordable experience, consider visiting during the low season, from April to October, when most tourists look for cooler destinations.
- April and May are the best months in Cancun, as there is little rain, the temperature is pleasant and prices are more attractive due to the low season.
- From June to October, however, is the “worst” time of year to visit Cancun, as the rainfall is more constant and these are the months with the highest incidence of storms and hurricanes. June, in particular, is one of the rainiest months. However, June to August are the hottest months. If you don’t mind some sporadic rain, summer offers less crowded beaches and an authentic experience. Plan your activities in the morning to avoid the afternoon downpours.
- If you plan to visit Cancun during the fall, monitor the weather conditions and be sure to purchase travel insurance. Apart from that, it can be an excellent time to travel to the destination.
