See how to get from Munich Airport to the hotel airport to the city center. Here, you’ll find tips on the best public and private transportation to make the journey.
1. How to get from the airport to the hotel by car?
The best way to get from Munich airport to your hotel is to hire a car, which you can do right from the airport. This way, you’ll be able to take advantage of the transportation to get to know the city during your trip and you’ll save a lot more than by taking a cab or taking public transport all the time.
There’s also the practicality of packing and leaving at the times you want. As well as the roads being beautiful, super safe and the towns in between being really nice villages to visit, Germany is home to the famous Autobahns, which are the roads that have no speed limit and those who enjoy driving can have an incredible experience.
Now, take a look at the tips below and make the most of it.
Book your car in advance
Make your reservation online as soon as possible, because a great tip to get a cheap car is to book as far in advance as possible and online. The earlier you book, the cheaper you’ll pay. It’s well worth it and you’ll save a lot with promotions, paying much less than renting a car on the spot.
Don’t rent a GPS in Munich
Another good tip is not to rent a car with a GPS, as it costs a lot per day. Instead, you can buy a good chip, like the one we listed above, unblocked for international calls and with unlimited Internet. That way, you’ll be able to use the map and location apps with your own cell phone.
Use this incredible price comparator
There are some car rental price comparators in Munich (and throughout Germany) that are sensational and search all the main car rental companies there, finding the best prices and excellent deals. We recommend one that you can use by going to the website and entering the date of your trip. It then searches for all the best car rental companies in Munich.
If you want to do the search, click here on Car Rental Comparator. In just a few seconds, you’ll have all the options for renting a car in Munich from the best companies on your screen, and you can choose the cheapest one. You really will save a lot.
More tips: prefer larger and reliable rental companies, such as Europcar, Budget and Avis. Take out basic insurance when booking, which is super important and is usually included in the price. But don’t fall for the companies who, when you pick up the car, try to push extra insurance that isn’t worth it.
- Important tip: Munich is a city that has many museums, attractions and tours. Always buy the tickets in advance. We always buy everything on this website that has the best price.
2. How to get from the airport to the hotel by transfer?
One tip we think it’s important to give is that if you’re not hiring a car in Munich, the best way to get from the airport to your hotel, and vice versa, is by transfer. The transfer ends up being cheaper than a cab, it’s much safer, you don’t have to wait in lines and risk wasting time looking for one.
When we arrive at our destination, we have our luggage with us, we don’t know the place and wanting to save money by taking buses and trains can end up resulting in a headache. We always prefer to secure a transfer at the airport and confirm a smooth and stress-free arrival at the hotel. In many parts of the world, airport cabs scam tourists, and we don’t like to experience this when it happens to us.
We really like this Transfer Finder, which is the largest website in the world. With it, you have three transfer options: one way directly from the airport to the hotel, one way from the hotel to the airport, or both (round trip). On this site, all you have to do is enter the airport you’re landing at and the destination you want to reach in Munich, and that’s it.
The website gives you the price, the time of the journey and all the other information you need. We really like using the transfer, as it’s much cheaper than taking a cab from the airport and it’s quick and easy.
3. How to get from the airport to the hotel by train?
If your hotel is in central Munich, you can get off at the airport using the S1 or S8 lines of the S-bahn (suburban train). The stations are close to terminals 1 and 2. This is also a great option for those taking a train out of Munich, as they pass through the city’s central station, the Hauptbhanhof train station, from where many regional trains leave for other parts of the country.
The train runs every day for 24 hours and the journey takes around 40 minutes. The ticket is expensive because it operates in zones, with the center in zone 1 and the airport in zone 4.
So to get from the airport to the center, you’ll need to pass through all 4 zones. For this journey, there are several types of ticket that are more worthwhile, such as the one-day ticket, which entitles you to use it for 24 hours for €12.
4. How to get from the airport to the hotel by cab?
As with all airports, there is always the option of taking a cab and getting to the center without worrying about tickets, timetables or taking the wrong train/bus. The airport cabs are located outside Terminal 1 (exits A to E). However, the cab ride to the center of Munich is quite expensive, around 50€. And the journey time is around 40 minutes.
5. How to get from the airport to the hotel by bus?
Another option is to get from the airport to the center by bus, as there are many lines that make the journey, including the 5A, which goes directly to the center. An alternative to the more traditional lines is to use the Lufthansa bus, which is organized by the airline and leaves from the arrivals terminal and goes directly to Munich Central Station.
The bus costs €10.50 for adults (€17 return) and €5.50 for children (€11 return). It leaves every 20 minutes.
