Milan’s main tourist attraction, Milan Cathedral, cannot be left off your list of things to do when traveling to Italy. And in this article, we present a complete guided tour of this wonderful church that exudes the city’s history and culture. Check it out:
About Milan Cathedral
Milan Cathedral, also known as the Duomo di Milano, is considered one of the largest churches in the world. Its construction began in 1386 at the behest of the first Duke of Milan, Gian Galeazzo Visconti, and at the request of Archbishop Antonio de Saluzzi. It was only completed in the 19th century, in 1886.
Without a doubt, one of the church’s most eye-catching features is its Gothic architecture, which impresses with its wealth of detail. The 45-meter-high building has a total of 3,400 statues, 2,300 of which are on the outside.

Marble is also present in the structure: 8,200 blocks of white marble extracted from the Candoglia quarry. The cathedral even has its own marble factory that makes the pieces for the building’s restorations.
Inside the church, you can admire the continuity of its imposing architecture, which has 24 columns spread over 5 basements. There are impressive statues and a precious relic important to the Catholic faith: one of the nails from the cross of Christ, which was donated by St. Helena, mother of Emperor Constantine, the first to convert to Christianity.
