What’s the weather like in Porto?
As Porto is located in the north of Portugal, it tends to have a colder climate than the south. In general, it is milder and more oceanic, which is very pleasant throughout the year.

1. Summer in Porto
The season lasts from June 21 to September 20, making it a very quiet season. The hottest month of the summer is undoubtedly August, when temperatures reach 25 ºC on the hottest days. The lows are around 14 ºC.
Rainfall between July and August, however, is the lowest of the year, making for a very dry climate. It is therefore important to pack lighter clothes and to keep constantly hydrated.
- What to pack for summer in Porto? Our tip for enjoying the season is to pack lighter clothes, such as dresses, skirts, shorts and hats. However, it’s worth noting that it’s important to pack at least one sweater because of the stronger winds in the city.
- What to enjoy in summer in Porto? As this is one of the sunniest seasons of the year, the weather is ideal for walking around and visiting the city’s many monuments.
- Extra tip: as the days are very long during the summer, on the “longest days” you’ll see the sun out until 9pm.
- Watch out for prices: prices go up a lot during this period, as it’s high season.

2. Autumn in Porto
The fall season lasts from September 21 to December 20 and is one of the rainiest seasons of the year.
In particular, from October onwards, the winds end up making the temperatures drop a lot. They range from 24 ºC (maximum in September) to 7 ºC (minimum in December, a month whose maximums only reach 14 ºC).
- What to pack for Porto in the fall? It’s definitely important to pack t-shirts, pants and jackets that are really warm. A raincoat or umbrella is also essential.
- What can you do in Porto in thefall? You can wander around the wineries and do some wine tasting, an excellent program for the weather which is starting to cool down. You can also take advantage of the rainy days to visit closed places.

3. Winter in Porto
The season lasts from December 21 to March 20 and is quite intense: sometimes you feel that no matter how many clothes you put on, the cold will prevail. The coldest month in Porto during winter averages 9 ºC, with highs of 14 ºC and lows of 6 ºC.
- What to pack for winter in Porto? Take heavy coats, woolen clothes and shoes to protect yourself well. Also, don’t forget to keep your feet dry, wear gloves, scarves and hats. Another thing you can do is buy some clothes there, as the offer and prices are usually very good. Some stores we recommend are Lefties and Decathlon.
- What to do in winter in Porto? A very good tip for sightseeing in Porto is to go to Serra da Estrela. There you can see snow, go skiing and taste the delicious Serra da Estrela cheese. You can also enjoy the museums, cinemas, theaters and shopping malls that the city has to offer. It’s important to remember that, due to the low season, opening hours are reduced in most places.
4. Spring in Porto
The season runs from March 21 to June 20 and is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful times of the year. Here, the city blooms with cheerful, sunny weather. Temperatures also rise, with highs reaching 23ºC and lows of 14ºC.
Spring is also considered the best time to visit Porto and other Portuguese cities, such as Lisbon. This is because the weather is warmer, without so much rain, and there are more people on the streets, which is great for taking walks in the fresh air.
- What to pack for spring in Porto? This will depend on when you’re traveling. In general, it’s good to take t-shirts, pants, shorts, light and medium jackets, but if you’re traveling at the beginning of spring, it’s good to invest more in jackets and, if you’re traveling towards the end of the season, you can pack lighter clothes, without neglecting a warmer jacket.
- What to do in Porto in spring? Enjoy a good walk in the streets, along the banks of the river, enjoy the colors of the city and the flowery climate. As well as visiting indoor places like Porto’s museums.
