Check out a complete guide on where to shop in Mexico City and enjoy the best of this destination. By the way, we’ve already told you that shopping in Mexico City is VERY worthwhile, as the city has very good prices, the exchange rate is usually favorable and you can even redeem part of the value of some purchases by asking for Tax Free in the stores.
1. Markets and streets
Mexico City has several craft markets scattered all over the place, with great prices (and where you can also haggle). Here you’ll find traditional skulls, umbrellas, skeletons, fridge magnets, handmade clothes with embroidery, objects inspired by artists such as Frida Kahlo and more.
The markets are real tourist attractions, full of life. Especially worth visiting are the Mercado de Artesanías de Coyoacán (near the Frida Kahlo Museum), the Mercado de Artesanías de la Ciudadela (Plaza de La Ciudadela), El Bazaar Sábado (in San Angel), the Mercado de Xochimilco, the Mercado de Artesanías del Pueblo and the Mercado Insurgentes (Zona Rosa).
These are the most popular, but there are several others around the city. And remember to take cash with you so you can bargain.
The streets, which are very pleasant and colorful, are great for finding both local stores and luxury boutiques. It’s worth exploring Avenida Presidente Masaryk (in Polanco, full of luxury brands), Corredor Peatonal Madero (more popular, between Zócalo and Alameda Central) and Mercado Roma (between Condesa and Roma Sur).
If you’re looking for a “modern” area, you can browse the stores in the Zona Rosa, between Paseo de la Reforma and Bosque Chapultepec.
- Important tip: Mexico City is a city with many tourist attractions, such as museums and tours. That’s why our tip is to always buy your tickets in advance. We buy everything on this website that has the best price.
2. Shopping centers in Mexico City
There are several shopping malls in Mexico City, but if you can only visit one, go to Antara, which is in the tourist district of Polanco and is open every day from 11am to 8pm.
It has beautiful architecture and stores such as Adidas, Aldo, American Eagle, Apple, Baty and Body Works, Benetton, Bershka, Boss, Birkenstock, Carolina Herrera, Calvin Klein, Guess, Deisugal, Jo Malone, L’Occitane, Kipling, Levis, Longchamp, MAC, Mango, Michael Kors, Nike, Pandora, Puma, Pull and Bear, Pink, Ugg, Sephora, Victoria’s Secret, The North Face and more!
In addition, there is the Santa Fe shopping center, with North American and European stores very similar to the Antara catalog – but the highlight is the Lego Store, very cool for those traveling with children to Mexico City. It’s worth a second shopping trip, or if you’re staying in the southwest of the city, on Paseo de las Lomas.
A third and final option would be Reforma 222, which is super modern and central, close to El Ángel de la Independencia (one of the city’s tourist attractions), but with “fewer” stores. Adidas, Bershka, Tommy, Benneton, Converse, Mango, Zara and Pandora are some of the stores you’ll find here.
- Going to Mexico City and short on time? It’s worth booking a Mexico City sightseeing bus tour.
3. Punta Norte Outlets
There is also the city’s outlet, which has a good variety of “tiendas” (stores) at good prices. It’s a 40-minute drive from the city center and has a good structure, with snack bars and toilets so you can spend a whole afternoon.
Here you’ll find discounts of up to 60% off in stores such as Adidas, Adolfo Domínguez, Asics, Calvin Klein, Calzedonia, Bimba y Lola, Carolina Herrera, Dolce and Gabbana, GAP, Guess, Hugo Boss, Lacoste, Nike, Pepe Jeans, puma, Quicksilver, Reebok, Norht Face, Tommy Hilfiger, Under Armour, Prada, Kipling, Samsonite, Sephora, Swarovski and more.
If you get hungry, there are plenty of snack options, including the New York pizzeria Sbarro and the famous Krispy Kream doughnuts.
4. Palacio de Hierro
The last option in our Mexico City shopping guide is this huge department store, which sells everything and is similar to Macy’s. There are beauty and clothing items from national and international brands. It is located in the Polanco neighborhood, close to the Antara shopping mall, and we recommend a visit if you have extra time on your trip.
